"He was just becoming successful in America," Marilyn explained.

In his 1995 autobiography, Boy George wrote about Gavin having an affair in his teens with cross-dressing pop star Peter Robinson, known as Marilyn.

The star – famed for his long blonde hair in the 1980s - also said that he had initially denied the story because Bush were ‘just becoming successful in America’.

‘I agreed to lie against every grain of my being,’ Marilyn said at the time.

UPDATE: Marilyn has responded to Gavin's confession in an interview with In Touch, claiming their relationship was much more involved than Gavin let on:

"Gavin and Gwen are perfect for each other, but he was the love of my life," Marilyn told In Touch, adding that he dated Gavin for five years in the early '80s.

Marilyn - famed for his long blonde hair - has his head nestled into a teenage Rossdale's chest, his arm around his waist.

This month Rossdale finally confirmed the relationship with the cross-dressing singer, following years of denials.

Gavin Rossdale with his former gay lover Marilyn, with whom he enjoyed an affair as a teenager

The singer and guitarist, married to singer Gwen Stefani, initially denied the affair back in 1995 when Boy George wrote about it in his memoir.

He repeated these denials when Marilyn - real name Peter Robinson - spoke out last year, claiming Rossdale had been the love of his life.

But in a new interview with U.S.

magazine Details, Rossdale finally confessed to the liaison. Gavin denied the story for years, but now admits to it in an interview with Details:

Details: Last year, the cross-dressing pop singer Marilyn revealed that he was romantically involved with you in your teens--an assertion Boy George first made in 1995.

When Boy George first discussed the former couple's romance in his 1995 memoir, Take It Like A Man, Marilyn kept quiet, even when Gavin denied their love. Your culture and entertainment cheat-sheet.

You have to know what you like, and I know what I like.

Back in 1996, Gavin told Rolling Stone (via OK!) that Boy George was wrong:

"That's George's take--he doesn't know me.

He told how he had a fling with Marilyn, now 47, in the 1980s when he was just 17 years old. It’s a part of growing up - that’s it, no more, no less.’

In the interview, Rossdale shrugged off the affair as ‘experimentation,’ adding: ‘Yeah, that was it - you have to know what you like, and I know what I like.’

Boy George first wrote about Rossdale and Marilyn’s affair in his book, Take It Like a Man.

At the time, both men denied the relationship, with Rossdale insisting that he and Marilyn ‘were, and still are, good friends’ but nothing more.

However last year, Marilyn claimed in a U.S.

magazine that he and Rossdale had been involved for five years.

And he said he had not admitted to the affair because of the media ‘glare’ when Bush were just forging a career in the U.S.

His admission has not pleased Marilyn, who told InTouch: 'I find it sad that when I spoke out about what we had, I was labelled a tattletale - and now, Gavin is using it to promote himself'.

Rossdale with wife Gwen Stefani earlier this month

Rossdale, who has two sons with Stefani, said he was afraid of the reaction.

‘I think at the outset there was a sort of fear - that was right at the beginning of Bush, and I didn’t want it to be part of it.

It's a part of growing up. That was it. Why haven't you talked about those claims?

Gavin Rossdale: I think at the outset there was a sort of fear--that was right at the beginning of Bush, and I didn't want it to be part of it. It felt like a cheap shot, so I was like, "I'm not getting involved." I've never wanted to appear closed about it.
