Christina Aguilera pauses her LA Pride set for a segment on Florida's 'Dont Say Gay' law
After starting off with high-energy, old-school numbers like "Dirrty" and "Fighter," Aguilera left the stage mid-set while a video played attacking Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill, which was signed into law March 28.
The law forbids classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade and has galvanized people on both sides of the political aisle.
"It has been dubbed the 'Don't Say Gay' bill," the video read.
I still hear stories about how that video has helped people, and it means everything to me,” Christina confessed to People Magazine.
“We’ve all come from struggle; We’ve all had to fight to be heard,” she declared, adding that being an LGBTQ+ ally “is not something that’s short-lived. I am so honored.
“I didn’t even think at the time that it was gonna be controversial,” Aguilera said of the video. We represent freedom – freedom of expression, owning who you are, fearlessness and also fantasy."
Christina Aguilera embraces turning 40: 'I treasure the growth that comes with age'
Over the weekend, Christina Aguilera headlined L.A.
Pride on June 11, and her performance was packed full of surprises — including a duet with Mya and wearing a bedazzled strap-on dildo. The two sang “XXX” from Petras’ EP Slut Pop, which the crowd seemed to really enjoy. The cape was so large her backup dancers had to hold it up for her.
Earlier in the night, Aguilera shared her gratitude for her LGBTQ fans and opened up about how she hopes her music speaks to them.
"Thank you so much for having me tonight.
You don’t need to subscribe. I am so humbled by your love and your support over the last 20-plus years,” she ended the show by saying, “I am so happy to always give back to you and give a voice, or try to, to anybody that feels like they’re suppressed, that feels like an outcast. That’s why I’m so anti-judgement and criticizing other people, or having no sympathy or compassion for things that don’t fit the norm inside your own box.”
Aguilera also used her platform in 2008 to actively campaign against California Proposition 8, which aimed to ban same-sex marriage in the state.

Mya reunites with Christina Aguilera on 'Lady Marmalade,' Paris Hilton honors newlywed Britney Spears
Aguilera didn't keep the spotlight all to herself.
One of the first songs she played was "Toxic," by her friend and newlywed Britney Spears. “That’s the stuff that means the most — Grammys are nice, but things like this brings it back to other people. The crowd sang to every word and even tried mimicking Xtina’s iconic run.
The fun didn’t stop there as Aguilera did an outfit change to a green look and accessorized with a large, bedazzled strap-on dildo to perform with Kim Petras.
"I am so happy to always give back to you and give a voice, or try to, to anybody that feels like they're suppressed, that feels like an outcast."
She added: "I love these shows more than anything, because you know what? I’m doing what I feel is intentionally right for me and what I am here as a greater purpose to do as a human being.”
