Some are really uncomfortable and really terrifying, and some are really funny and over the top. How do you navigate your career strategically as an out black newsmaker?
For me, and this is no judgment on anyone else who isn’t openly LGBT, I can’t get the truth out of someone if I am not living my own truth. I may have lost jobs here and there, but I didn’t care.
I’m so grateful that I’m able to unpack some of the complicated, messy, hilarious, and wild stories in the book. That’s why I titled the book Live Through This. If you say something really homophobic and disgusting, that can really damage your career. I’m not just calling out white people or straight people at all—it’s a wake up call to us as well.
You’ve been very vocal about the black church and the stigma it perpetuates against homosexuality and the LGBT community.
This film received a 2016 GLAAD Media Award nomination and was notably featured during a Black History Month event at the Obama White House. I hustled my ass off, worked for free as a writer just to build my name. To look for a place of healing and be shamed can really ruin somebody’s life. I learned how to fight, love, create, fail, succeed, and do it all over again in that city.
I think now when it comes to women artists, I think that every artist is performing at an LGBT pride event. I believe it’s sincere because they have LGBT people in their crews. There are a lot of folks everyone from Marsha Ambrosius to Beyonce to Fantasia—although she’s gotten in some heat for some things here and there—she has a big following.

However, Cane’s other memories in the book, where “not being seen or heard (not being loved),” offers a telling entry point into his search for identity and self-acceptance.
From calling out theological violence in the Black church in the essay “Holler If You Hear Me,” to reckoning with the materiality of poverty in “Your American Life,” to illustrating the disparity between Black and White working-class folk in “The Whole Town is Laughing at Me,” Cane locates the joy among the pain.
We have to speak up, but we have hypocrites at the church, like the late Eddie Long who says terrible things, and administers anti-gay marches, but allegedly slept with men.
That’s disgusting, and we, as the gay folks in the church, build the church and support the church. I felt like each essay had a take away of equality or social justice.
Lady Gaga is really sincere about it, you know she knows what she’s talking about.
