[is visibly taken aback; exits]

George: [answers Jerry's phone] Hello.
Helen Seinfeld: George?
George: Mrs. Seinfeld?
Helen Seinfeld: Oh, my God.
Jerry: Oh, my God. Ma?
Helen Seinfeld: Jerry?
Jerry: Ma.
George: Oh, my God!

My mother! Currently studying at George Mason University, Alex brings both expertise and passion to his work. Who are you? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jerry: So you don't take your coat off, and now everyone at NYU thinks I'm gay. Steeped in gayness.

George: (trying to convince a reporter that he's not gay) Look, you wanna have sex right now?

It was on purpose. When the time came for Seinfeld to tackle such a subject, both of the show's creators, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, were unsure of exactly how the episode would be received by the gay community.

Without a doubt, one of the best.

I've been outed!

We knew you were eavesdropping. With its repetition of the "Not that there's anything wrong with that" affirmation, "The Outing" received the award for Outstanding Comedy Episode. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
George: Of course not.

[stand-up:]
Jerry: I am getting a little tired of pretending to be excited every time it's somebody's birthday, you know what I mean?

Jerry later proposed the line "not that there's anything wrong with that" line, which turned out to be the thing that saved the episode.

This episode was nominated for the 1993 Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement In Writing In A Comedy Series.

‘The Outing’

Season 4, Episode 17 - Aired February 11, 1993

When a journalism student writes a profile on Jerry, he and George are outed as a gay couple.

Of course, I'm speaking about contemporary urban/suburban life where "liberal" or "tolerant" views are not only accepted, they're enforced. What kind of life are you leading?

Beside from the main story, we get some nice details that enrich the episode, like Elaine's problem with Jerry's birthday gift, Kramer's last line, the gang discussing ugliest leaders, Elaine and her coat problem, the guy from the militia.

Buck Naked? Its main characters were vain, petty, and practically sociopathic, and would never really grow or learn from any of their experiences. It actually comes out as a sequel to The Contest, not just because of the risky material but also because of one scene that makes reference to the classic. He's so neat and thin. Added another layer of off beat humor, to an already hilarious episode.

You could throw a dart out the window and hit someone better than me. I'm gonna go with you!
Jerry: "Guys And Dolls"?

This not only makes the scenario even funnier but significantly downplays any potential sense of homophobia that might have been interpreted in the character's reactions. While it had been done a few times in the past, this was one of the more notable first times in mainstream media that a fictional character expressed that being gay was not a problem, as well as the first time for a series to make an entire episode about it.

Maybe you're making porno films.
George: Yeah.
